Get to know TLD Design Center (Westmont)

1. What is your favorite part of the Chicago Yarn Crawl? 

The opportunity to interact with a diverse group of Fiber Art makers, customers and students who, at first blush, might not have realized the wonderland of fiber, threads, yarn, looms & more available behind the mannequin legs of TLD Westmont.

2. How long have you been in business and how did you get started?

I started my business home based in 1985, dyeing yarn, hand weaving, knitting and sewing ArtWear pieces. In 1993 (30+ yrs ago) I opened right here in Westmont, IL with my mother, JoAnn Deck. We began offering weaving, knitting, dyeing classes in response to requests and naturally began selling yarn, fibers, looms, beads and other supplies to support our creative art customers & friends. It was also then, that I held the big dream to buy a live/work building. My dream was realized August 2015 in Berwyn, IL. TLD DESIGN CENTER operates in BOTH locations. 

3. What makes your shop unique?

Never Ever Traditional

  1. Owned and operated by a life-long, career stitcher (sewing age 5/ pot holder weaver age 7 / bead weaver age 9 / knitter age 11) and Award winning Fiber Artist & former college instructor in fashion/clothing, textile science/design & Fiber Art 

  2. Yarn/Threads on cones (alongside balls, hanks & skeins)

  3. Owner is an Indie Dyer, Hand Painter & Printer of yarn, fiber, threads and fabrics.

  4. Classes offered for kids through Recently Retired and beyond

  5. Classes offered for first-timers through refreshers & well-seasoned

  6. Classes offered in Sewing, Fashion Design, weaving, knit wear design & more.

  7. Classes offered for advanced/professional level skills

  8. Owner designs/sells Patterns & Kits in weaving, knitting, crochet & more

  9. Floor Looms, Table Looms and Rigid Heddle looms for sale, rental and student’s Use during Weaving Classes.

  10. Spinning Wheels for sale, rental and students use during spinning classes.

  11. Knitting Machines for classes, studio rental and for sale (used/refurb)

  12. Studio work space rental for wet Felting, dyeing, weaving, sewing, knitting machine, metal smith, glass fusing & lampwork

Yarn shoppers & visitors are welcome Wed through Sat  11am to 6pm (no appointment needed). Westmont classes & events happen as scheduled

4. What is your favorite part of being an LYS owner? 

Is this a trick question? Being surrounded by yarn...talking about yarn....looking at the yarn...touching the yarn....smelling the yarn. Helping customers and students find or create the perfect yarn.
